SPACE SHUTTLE CARRIER
CONTROL STATION
This is a program by NASA with reusable orbiter or orbiter vehicle (which carries the astronauts) that orbits the earth in a low earth orbit. It is also called as Space Transportation System (STS). There were 135 missions from 1981 to 2011, when the program ended.
The Space Transportation System (STS) consists of three parts:
Orbiter Vehicle (OV)
Solid Rocket Boosters (SRB)
External Tank (ET)
Both the Orbiter Vehicle and SRBs are reusable.

VEHICLE ASSEMBLY BUILDING
NASA built 6 Orbiter Vehicles as a part of the Space Shuttle program. Two of the Orbiters, Challenger and Columbia were lost during the missions . Columbia was lost during re-entry . Challenger was lost during launch . After the Space Shuttle Program concluded in 2011 the other orbiters are housed in several museums around the US. The first orbiter Enterprise was developed for flight tests in atmosphere and to prove the ‘landing capability’. There are only Five space shuttle orbiters displayed in United States. They are given below :
